Tax Information
Real Estate Taxes
Real Estate Taxes are local property
taxes that apply to land, houses, buildings, and any improvements made to
property in Dinwiddie County. Each year, the County reviews property values to
determine how much your property is worth for tax purposes. The Board of
Supervisors sets the tax rate, and your bill is calculated by multiplying that
rate by your property’s assessed value.
Tax bills are sent out twice a year
and must be paid by the due dates set by the County. If taxes are not paid on
time, penalties and interest will be added. These taxes are an important source
of funding for services in Dinwiddie County, including schools, public safety,
and roads.
If your mortgage company pays your
taxes through an escrow account, the bill will usually be sent directly to
them. However, property owners are still responsible for making sure the tax is
paid. Be sure to notify the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Treasurer’s
Office if you move, change your mailing address, or sell your property.
Some property owners may qualify for
tax relief programs, such as exemptions for elderly or disabled residents.
These programs are handled by the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office.

Personal Property Taxes
Personal Property Taxes include cars,
trucks, motorcycles, trailers, campers, boats, mobile homes, and business
equipment kept within the county. These taxes help support county services
such as schools, public safety, and infrastructure.
How
it Works
- Who is taxed?
Anyone who owns taxable personal property located in Dinwiddie County on January
1 of the tax year.
- How is value determined? Most vehicles are valued using pricing guides.
Dinwiddie County uses 90% of fair market value as the assessed
value.
- What is the tax rate?
The Board of Supervisors sets the rate each year, charged per $100 of
assessed value. Rates vary depending on the type of property.
- Tax relief on vehicles: Many personal-use vehicles qualify for Personal
Property Tax Relief (PPTR), which reduces the amount owed on the first
$20,000 of value.
Proration
(Partial-Year Tax)
- If you buy, sell, or move a taxable vehicle,
trailer, or boat during the year, your tax may be adjusted so you only pay
for the months it was registered in Dinwiddie.
- Some property, like mobile homes and business
equipment, is taxed for the full year and is not prorated.
Billing
& Payment
- Bills are mailed twice a year, with payments due
on June 5 and December 5 (If the office is closed due to
weather, holiday or the dates fall on a weekend, taxes will be due on the
next business day)
- You can pay online, by mail, at the Treasurer’s
Office, or at participating BSV and First Bank branches.
- Payments made after the due date are subject to
penalties and interest.
Special
Situations
- Military personnel
and volunteer fire/rescue members may qualify for exemptions or
reduced rates.
- If you believe your property value is too high, you can
request a review from the Commissioner of the Revenue.
